Addressing Misinformation and Reaffirming Our Commitment to Student Safety

The Wayne County School District Board of Education and District Administration are aware of concerns and discussions currently circulating on social media regarding student safety and district operations. Because misinformation and speculation can spread quickly online, we feel it is important to reaffirm our commitment to the safety, well-being, and privacy of every student we serve.

Student safety remains our highest priority. Our administrators, teachers, staff members, and Board members work diligently each day to provide a safe and supportive learning environment while following established laws, policies, procedures, and reporting requirements designed to protect students.

When concerns or incidents are reported, the District takes them seriously and follows appropriate processes for review, response, documentation, and, when necessary, corrective action. However, federal and state privacy laws, as well as our ethical responsibility to students and families, prohibit the District from publicly discussing confidential student matters, disciplinary actions, personnel matters, or details involving minors. While some may interpret the District's inability to publicly respond to online accusations as silence, it is in fact a legal and moral obligation to protect students and employees from the release of confidential information.

We also recognize that public speculation and the sharing of incomplete or inaccurate information can unfortunately harm students, families, and employees. We encourage our community to approach online discussions thoughtfully and responsibly, remembering that real students and individuals may be affected by rumors, assumptions, or the spread of unverified claims.

The Board of Education fully supports the continued efforts of district administration, school administration, teachers, and staff to uphold student safety, follow established procedures, and act in the best interest of students while complying with all applicable laws and policies.

We value our partnership with parents and community members and encourage anyone with legitimate concerns to work directly with school or district administration through appropriate channels so concerns can be addressed responsibly, constructively, and with the full context necessary to support students appropriately.
