Loa Community Council Minutes Feb. 3, 2021

LES Community Council Meeting Minutes 2-3-2021

Attending: Pres., Missy Daley, Beth Peisner, Austin Moore (teacher), Andrea Peterson, Loryn Morgan, Tyler Newton, Brandy Jones, Tacey Wood, Principal Cherie Blackburn via zoom

Welcome: Missy Daley and Cherie Blackburn

Missy asked everyone to review the minutes from last meeting. She then motioned to approve the minutes. Beth Peisner seconded the motion.

Cherie Blackburn jumped right into the agenda stating that the school had hired Makelle Nelson with trust lands funds to be a paraprofessional assigned specifically to second grade. The second grade now has two paraprofessionals in their class all day. Cherie asked the parents if they thought it was going well in the second grade. Missy said she was pleased with how the class was structured and being managed.

Missy wanted to review the current plan and the budget and go over some changes it showed. The budget showed more money than the plan did. Tyler Newton explained the difference was from extra funds the school had received after the plan was submitted.  There was discussion on how to spend the excess funds to best serve students.

Beth Peisner suggested it be used to bring in art/music/and science experiences for the kids. It was agreed that needs to happen. Beth is going to reach out to some people in the art community. Tacey Wood is going to find music opportunities and Cherie is going to research the new science curriculum.

Cherie also mentioned where some of the current funds would be spent. That included software renewals, iPads, science books and supplies for STEM activities.

Cherie mentioned that some of the money could carry over to next year and the council would need to decide the best way to use it. Hiring a part time teacher was discussed again. Tyler informed the council of the budget and the restraints some of the funding has on it. He gave the council estimates on what a full time teacher, part time teacher, and a paraprofessional would cost for one year. There was a brief discussion and it was decided to table the issue until the next meeting when we had more accurate numbers for the budget.

Missy did request that at minimum we continue to have 2 aides in the second grade class if they were to remain combined next year.

It was suggested that the faculty be asked what the biggest needs are before the next meeting so the council could have a better idea of where to allocate the funds for next year. Cherie will bring it to the faculty on Feb 22nd

Missy mentioned that communication from the school to the parents has been great. Cherie said to spread the word that we are always happy to have parent volunteers at the school.

Missy asked that we have a rough draft of the budget for the next meeting. Cherie said she will have it available.

The next meeting is scheduled for March 3, 2021 at 2:30 in the LES library.

Missy motioned to adjourn the meeting. Tacey made a motion to second it.

Meeting adjourned at 3:45.
