October, 2017 started HES’s STEAM activities as the students were challenged to build a body using  only paper and a little tape for Frankenstein’s heavy(can of mushrooms) head.  How can paper be made to hold up a heavy can?  You would be surprised.

In November, 2017 students were challenged to build a catapult that could launch candy pumpkins the farthest.  Mrs. Bradbury led this STEM Activity for students in K-5 grades.

Using Engineering to design and build a catapult out of selected materials, students worked in groups to discuss and plan their challenge.  Measurement and math were used to estimate and find the greatest distance the pumpkins could be launched.  Students then could adjust and plan their machines to be the best it could be.

Later in November, Students were challenged to build a Mini Mayflower that could float and hold as many people(pennies) as possible.  Tinfoil ships were planned using tape, Styrofoam plate and aluminum foil.  Students again worked in groups to stand up to the challenge of the most people aboard.  Boats were tested in tubs of water and filled with pennies until they started to sink.  How was the best boat constructed?   That was a challenge.
